Googe, Barnabe
(1540-1594)
   The son of Robert Googe, recorder of Lincoln, he was born at Alvingham in Lincolnshire on 11 June, St. Barnaby's Day (St. Barbabas). He studied at Christ's College, Cambridge, and at New College, Oxford, but does not appear to have taken a degree. He then became a retainer to his kinsman, Sir William Cecil 1st Lord Burghley (chief adviser to Queen Elizabeth), and in 1563 the queen appointed him one of her gentlemen-pensioners. In 1574 he was sent on service to Ireland, and in 1582 he was appointed provost marshal of the presidency court of Connaught, Ireland. The Overthrovv of the Gout, 1577. The Prouerbes of Sir Iames Lopez de Mendoza, 1579. A Prophecie Lately Transcribed, 1672. Some of his poems: "Egloga Septima," "The Popish Kingdome," "Egloga Tertia," "Commynge Home Warde Out of Spayne," "The Vnfortunate Choyse of His Ualentyne," "Two Lynes Shall Tell the Gryefs," "Ons Musynge as I Sat," "To Alexander Neuell."
